Critical Care Training Programs

back Back to Policies and Procedures

Intent

The ACGME requires that institutions that sponsor more than one critical care training program have an institutional policy governing the educational resources committed to critical care training programs and ensuring cooperation of all involved disciplines

Policy Statement:

The institution is committed to the services of all of the critical care training programs it sponsors.

Description:

  1. Currently critical care training occurs in 8 separate and distinct units within Shands at UF. Anesthesia Critical Care Medicine utilizes resources on the second floor in the SICU and on the ninth floor in the Intermediate Care Unit. Pediatric Critical Care is located on the 10th floor in a unit opened in 2002. Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine uses a unit on the 5th floor. In addition, there is a Neonatal ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, Coronary Care Unit, and Burn ICU where resident training occurs.
  2. The Institutional Critical Care Committee is composed of the directors of each of the specialty units. This committee allows a forum for discussion of educational issues affecting the training programs.
  3. Unresolved issues revolving around accreditation and ACGME requirements are brought to the DIO and GMEC for resolution or recommendation to Hospital/College of Medicine leadership.
  4. Compliance with the ACGME requirements is monitored through the internal review process.
