Graduate Medical Education Competency Committee

Intent:
ACGME requires that the Graduate Medical Education Committee provide leadership and oversight in ensuring that residents demonstrate achievement of the six general competencies - patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal communications skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and system-based practices.
Policy Statement:
The Graduate Medical Education Committee establishes a committee to assure that there is adequate support and resources for the programs to develop curricula and evaluation systems to implement the six competencies.
Description:
- The GMEC Creates a Graduate Medical Education Competency Committee which will be chaired by a program director from one of the core programs who is also a member of the GMEC. Membership of the Committee shall consist of other program directors, residents and faculty as deemed appropriate by the Chair and DIO.
- Specific responsibilities of the committee include:
- make recommendations to the GMEC and to the institution with regards to support needed to implement the competencies,
- to provide leadership in developing content for program directors to incorporate into program curriculum,
- provide guidance on appropriate tools to evaluate resident competence in the six competencies,
- establish dependable and (accurate outcome measures to assess residents),
- assist programs to implement a process that links the use of the educational outcomes in the competencies with program improvement.
