GMEC Duty Hours Committee

Intent:
The ACGME requires that institutions and programs are in compliance with the duty hour regulation.
Policy Statement:
The GMEC will establish a Committee to formulate policy and monitor compliance with ACGME duty hour rules.
Description:
- GMEC appoints a Duty Hours Committee to be chaired by a core program director who is a member of the GMEC. Other members of the Committee will include other program directors, faculty and residents as deemed appropriate by the Chair and the DIO.
- The Duty Hours Committee will assist in formulating formal written institutional policies that govern resident duty hours and compliance of the Institutional Specific Program Requirements.
- The GMEC Duty Hours Committee will monitor programs to assure that each program director has developed and distributed to the residents and faculty the programs formal written policies governing resident duty hours in compliance with the Institutional and Specific Program Requirements. These policies shall address at least duty hours per week, days off per week, on-call schedules, maximum hours on-call, the 10-hour rest period and moonlighting.
- The GMEC Duty Hours Committee will also regularly monitor the implementation of the duty hours restrictions by the programs.
- The GMEC Duty Hours Committee will recommend to the GMEC and to the institution which resources may be needed to successfully implement duty hours rules and to provide safe patient care.
