Evaluation

Intent:

Evaluation and feedback are critical to the personal development of the resident and to continuous improvement in the educational process.

Policy Statement:

Each program is responsible for developing its own monitoring tools for the evaluation of each residentıs progress and the program.

Description:

  1. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Program Requirements (requirements contained in each specialty) state that each program must evaluate each residentıs performance in writing at least twice during the academic year. Evaluations must address each residentıs progress in achieving skills in each of the six competencies (patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and systems-based practice). There must be evidence that the program communicates such evaluations to the resident in timely manner and that attempts are made to remedy any deficiencies noted by the facultyıs evaluation of the residents. The program must maintain a permanent record of the evaluation for each resident and make that evaluation record accessible to the resident and to other authorized personnel that the resident may so designate. Each program must provide a written final evaluation for each resident who completes the program. The evaluation must include a review of the residentıs performance during the final period of training and should verify that the resident has demonstrated sufficient professional ability to practice competently and independently. Final evaluation should be part of the residentıs permanent record maintained by the institution.
  2. Residents must be offered the opportunity to evaluate the quality of the curriculum and the extent to which the educational goals of the program have been met. This must be a written evaluation and should occur no less than annually. The residents must also be given the opportunity to evaluate the teaching faculty as to their effectiveness in supporting the goals and curriculum as established by the program. These must be in writing and be anonymous. The program must show how these evaluations are communicated to the faculty and are used to improve the educational process.
