National Resident Matching Program Participation
Back to Policies and Procedures
Intent:
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Institutional Requirement (II a. 2.b) strongly suggests that institutions and all sponsored programs participate in an organized matching program such as the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Policy Statement:
All programs offering PGY-1 positions ("C" or "P" tracks) should only offer these positions through the NRMP process. All programs offering PGY-2 (³S² track) positions for which the NRMP offers a match should participate in the NRMP process. All exceptions must be approved by the Graduate Education Committee or the Director of Graduate Medical Education.
Description:
NRMP
The NRMP provides a system for the confidential selection and ranking of applicants to residency positions. It is not a centralized application service.
Eligible Applicants
All applicants must meet the requirements of the ACGME as found in the institutional Requirements (II .A.)
Categories of Applicants
- Sponsored Applicants -- United States seniors in Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) schools or graduates of LCME schools who choose to be sponsored by a medical school.
- Independent Applicants -- Graduates of LCME schools not sponsored by a medical school, graduates or enrollees in schools accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools, graduates or enrollees of schools accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, graduates or enrollees in schools not accredited by the LCME. (International Medical Graduate)
Sponsored applicants are considered committed to the Match. Their withdrawal from the Match must be endorsed by an official of the sponsoring medical school.
Independent applicants may withdraw from the Match.
Both sponsored and independent applicants must withdraw by written request and must do so before the NRMP published deadline date for submission of the rank order lists.
Programs may withdraw positions or withdraw entirely before the submission of the order list but only with the permission of the Graduate Medical Education Committee or the Director of Graduate Medical Education. Likewise programs may make offers to independent applicants prior to submission of the rank order lists but only with the permission of the Graduate Medical Education Committee or the Director of Graduate Medical Eduation.
Programs are encouraged to keep all positions in the "Match" process. Requests to withdraw or offer positions outside of this system should be rare.
